I started my diving without a computer as purely economical decision, but it turned out to be a good excercise. It gave me sort of "gut feeling" about table limits. Imprinted typical profiles and maximum times into my head. Maybe it will save me from bends one day - computers do break sometimes.

I'm about to switch to computer though and my choice is one of Suunto Viper/Stinger/Cobra family. Most important thing about them is that they employ RGBM model in their calculations which is believed to be more accurate than most popular Bulhman algorithm used by most of other computers. You can learn more about them at www.suunto.fi.

As for price... Try buying from UK. It's MUCH cheaper than US. At least for Suunto.
