With a new or unfamiliar piece of gear it is always necessary to do the familiarization on the surface instead of in the water.
Was he trying to make fun of you because you were getting a handle on your gear before the dive? If so, shame on him.
I have previously shared my experiences of 'Whoops wrong wetsuit' and 'Whoops wrong fin'. Now those ones are the ones to laugh at. Not learing new gear!
