I look at my guages often as all divers should. If my SPG died, the dive is aborted, but I still know how much air I have -- more or less. After all I looked at it a little while ago. So I might not know exactly how much I have, I can still safely end the dive.
Same if the computer fails. I still know how I was doing right before the thing failed. Again, it is time to abort the dive when you lose an important piece of gear and a dead depth guage/computer is somehting that will end a dive for me.
The problem is in the next dive if I did not keep track of my dives. That is because once the computer dies, I am on the tables and I need to remember my previous dives. Of course this return fo rthe next dive requires that i have a spare guage to use.
