Mike Kane is completely correct about the use of O2 by WKPP. Several big differences exist between the way they use it, and the way recreational divers use nitrox.

When WKPP divers use oxygen, it is for shorter durations( than a full blown maxed out nitrox dive, with low PO2 breaks to eliminate toxic effects that continued use of high PO2 would cause. Recreational divers can not do these low PO2 breaks, and still be recreational divers.

As to the enzyme issues, they are a consideration on daily or several day weekly diving ( which alot of us do), but not much of an issue for the 10 or 12 time per year huge adventure level dives a top cave diver might do. For these guys, having perfect fitness levels, good nutrition and good hydration are enough to mitigate the issue, provided they are following WKPP schedules.

Dan
