Lubrication is key

The usual KY Jelly won't work because it is water soluble. There are other lubricants available that will not wash away in water. Without them, you won't enjoy it.

Don't apply your usual SAC!

Other than that, cold water is NOT a problem. DIR gear is, though, because it just won't work with a crotch strap in place.
