Jeff, sorry to hear about your buddy. I wish him/her all the best.

I asked this question last year, and got several good responses. Here's the synopsis of what I found.

Diving Physiology in Plain English by Jolie Bookspan.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0930406133/qid=996182557/sr=1-1/ref=sc_b_1/103-5156756-2383010
- This is a great one. An excellent starting point, and a good basic text. Kind of a "foot in the door."

Basic Diving Physics and Applications by Bruce Wienke

And I just ordered this one, it looks really interesting. As an (ex) EMT, I'm hoping it's as good as the reviews state.
Dive/First Responder by Richard Clinchy

I have the full US Navy Dive Manual in a series of PDF docs, I can toss them up on my server for you to download if you like, or I could burn it onto CD and give it to you when you're next up here. Good stuff.

That oughta keep you busy for quite some time. I would definitely start with the Bookspan book. Other more knowledgable folks than I can probably fill in additional titles, but those are the highlights.

While not recommended to me per se, I kind of like Gary Gentile's books. The "Advanced Wreck Diving" is interesting, although has some advice that many think a bit outdated. He's a real NE Wrecker, and writes as one.
The Technical Diving Handbook by Gary Gentile

Advanced Wreck Diving Guide by Gary Gentile

Spend a little time in the techdiver archives (some really entertaining stuff is in there), and maybe even DIRquest (another good source of archives) if you're on the computer.

If he doesn't respond here, drop an email to John Walker. He's probably the most read person around. He'd probably has the best info.
