Actually it was not shallow water blackout that got him. That phenomenon happens on accent and usually at about 15 feet from the surface due to expanding volume in the lungs draining the rest of the body of oxygen.
I just was reading over on freedivelist that his buddy was watching him dive and at about 45 seconds in to the dive Loren was not moving. What kept the buddy from going down to get him was stress. He could not relax enough to dive to 60 feet and do a rescue.
