We clip things off all the time of the crotch D-ring, even if we aren't scootering..
I usually leave the D-ring inverted when not scootering, but you can still clip things off like, Game bags, tool bags, stage/deco bottles and the like..
I believe the crotch strap is a very important item because it anchors the BP and if you are planning on anytype of penetration, or even for that matter, just about anytime I'm not scootering, I turn the D-ring inside out so I don't risk the entanglement..
