Kevin:

I've gotta admit, after spending this last weekend at San Clemente, there is no thrill greater than pounding on metallic debris in areas that are known to be strewn with UXO. You never know what is going to happen.

But what the hell, its a matter of statistics. If it is obviously ferrous and not magnetic, no problemo. Just start whacking away until you strip away the outer core of marine debris encrusting that iron treasure.

On the other hand, if its brass and shaped like a projectile, maybe you should just leave it alone.

BTW, this weekend we were on the Encore to San Clemente (Begg Rock trip was re-directed), and around noon there were four LOUD explosions, three of which produced visible flame and smoke on the beach about 1 mile away, just off Pyramid. Great display, the military really knows how to blow things up really good. The Navy made no announcements and did not warn us off, but Skipper Pam moved the boat as soon as possible.
