Good question. No contradiction, however. The front d ring is not used when swimming except as a scooter ring. Nothing dangles below the plane of the diver in order to preserve streamlining.

On the hang, however, it serves as a handy place to store negatively buoyant things like cameras or drop weights. I like to put drop weights on the deco line so I can clip one on the front d ring and inflate my suit for added warmth at the 20-longest stop. The location of the weight on the front d ring is ideal weight distribution and, as MHK can tell you, I can hang like that, completely motionless, for an hour.
