Your points are valid for deep tech stuff which ain't my game and never will be. As to the tool bag, the top snaps to my DUI left shoulder D ring and the bottom to a D ring on the left side of my tank. Very snug and compact.
BTW, I put a D ring on the bottom web loop of the Pioneer to which I attach the clip to my SMB which I have tucked into the pocket of my bp backpack. Another negative for the crotch strap: I wouldn't be able to remove the SMB with it in the way. I'll e-mail you some digital pics of my rig improvements.
