I keep it closed and then generally open it on my ascent which if you have added the proper amount of gas [ read that as very little, just enough to be comfortable] as you ascent you can basically just shrug your shoulder and vent as you go up.. If you are doing a multi-level profile and not ascending on the line I'll vent to get comfortable at the new depth and then close it after I've established proper bouyancy..
