Agreed. With tough conditions and/or a good instructor, self-selection seems to me the best way. The problem comes when the instructor is conflicted or just doesn't know any better. Just so I get a sense of proportion, how many classes would you guess you DM's for over the past year. From what you wrote, I'd guess between 8-12.
