I still remember too clearly a boat trip out of Ventura that had an instructor from (I believe) one of the local Ventura county shops conducting a small class. This guy was chain smoking the whole damn day. I know because I was constantly trying to get upwind of the stench. My wife and I were disgusted at the example he set for the students. My instructor back when had his faults, but tolerance of substance abuse was not one of them. He had an obese smoker in one class I saw, and I could literally feel his turmoil with having that person in his class.
I like the banner in my local Ventura shop regarding their dive charters: Smokers and thieves will be used as chum.
