Point Lobos is "the jewel of the state park system" and it has a neat cave in it too with "light at the end of the tunnel." its closer to SoCal than Gerstle is, and the walk from your vehicle to the boat ramp is short and sweet.
you can also try out south monastery next door on your trip too. north monastery can get hairy, so i would stay away from that side.
overall, i would rate lobos a little bit ahead of Gerstle because lobos is an easier entry.
