I've seen them under water less than a dozen times, but frequently see them in the Catalina channel. They usually dive when I get close, but I had a great encounter Sunday. I saw one at the surface, so I motored slowly to get close. I put my boat in neutral and to my surprise, the sunfish came over to me. He swam around the boat twice, then turned back on his side to soak up some rays. I stayed with him for more than ten minutes before I got on my way to the island. I had a visitor from Germany with me and she had a great time with the Mola Mola, hundreds of baby dolphins and water that she said felt as cold as the North Sea.
