Rubber/polypropylene stretches less than skin does. So the gas would have to vent somehow, at some pressure failure point, once it has begun to build up, or else its build up would be suppressed. Gas under pressure is less bouyant since it displaces less water than if released to ambient pressure.
I am afraid I do not follow the backplate & wings comment however.
