I certainly agree with Jim's advice about trust-me dives and also the postings by everyone here who have pointed out that we all have to be responsible for ourselves in the water.
Interesting that Jim's experience occurred in Hawaii, because I had been thinking that this problem with DM lax attitudes was maybe more prevalent in non-U.S. dive locales. For example, I did my first diving after my OW classes in Cozumel; when I showed up I asked the shop owner what depth he thought I should limit myself to as a newly certified diver. "Oh, you're certified for up to 130 feet," he said with a straight face. Yeah, right ....
