i read in my lobster book that those northern Santa Barbara beaches are subject to natural tar oozings, which floats on the Ocean and gets onto all of your gear. but i have personally never dived there. from the editorial, i figured that the better SoCal beaches are further south.
seahunt-MikeB mentioned a certain spot where the surface tar is not as bad, but i forgot which beach he mentioned. i think he said over by the UCSB area, or thereabouts.
