An area called the "Metridium Fields" lies just a bit off the oft-maligned breakwater at San Carlos Beach in Monterey. The depths go from about 60-85 feet, with great stuff in the 70-80 range. Easily accessible and findable from the beach (just follow a pipe).

If you want to see lots of Metridium, I highly recommend it. And, extra bonus for you, the whole area is off limits to spearfishing. (This is not entirely true. You can't fish in depths less than 60 fsw. But it's close enough)

-- The easiest way to hit the field is via inflatable. While a bit unorthadox, you can sometimes talk someone into dropping you off there on their way south. Just ask around at the launch ramp.
