That's a point that's brought up in the PADI DM manual - that divers who own their own gear are more likely to dive than those who don't. However, I believe that rental gear has it's place. It took me almost a year to buy most of my kit. Renting for that year gave me the opportunity to buy gear one piece at a time as I gained knowledge and learned what I needed. I think it helped me avoid some very costly mistakes.
