In Reply to: Taz ... backplates are definitely NOT appropriate for new divers. posted by CalAbDiver on August 25, 2001 at 22:50:23:

but as some would say, it's time to put up or
shut up.

please provide us w/your hard data that backplates
are "dangerous" for new divers.

karl, no joking here: please provide us w/your
evidence, or else...

as for ditching wt, that's what those integrated
wt pouches on the side of my waist belt are for:
to ditch wt in an emergency--just like w/my old
jacket b.c. are you not aware that backplate
b.c.'s can indeed have an integrated wt system?

the opposite, though, i believe is true: backplates
are very appropriate for new divers as they won't
have to put up w/'dangerous' air trapping in their
b.c.'s which may contribute to out of control ascents
and may lengthen the buoyancy control learning curve.

learning how to use a superior piece of equipment
from the get-go is more than appropriate--it's
downright safer and more comfortable, and less
expensive in the long run.

kelphead.
