If I do surface swims they are on my back... However, if I ever found myself in a position of being in a position of routinely doing surface swims ( ie: Monastary Beach or Monterey to name a few) I would still swim on my back, but if you feel a snorkel is necessary then put it in your pocket and take it out when you need it [ which in my view is never].
