Guys I talked to said it was for acclimating themselves to cold water. "Whatever" says I. I'm developing a theory wherein some guy walks into a dive shop and sees an advanced NITROX course being held or say, a class being conducted by a Florida cave diver and sees that the people are'nt wearing hoods in the pool and makes a mental note of the gear config and then decides to imitate the config thinking that it will make him look like an experienced stud without having to take all that icky physiology junk that will surely put him to sleep.
Just a theory.
