I guess I'll have to re-read the book. My recollections of it seem to indicate that the cliffs he referred to were in San Pedro. If that is true, that shoreline has been modified so many times you would probably never find anything.
Also, any anchorage they would have used would have to have been protected from a west wind and swell. That would indicate that if he was referring to Dana Point they would have been east of the cliff area you are referring to. ie: right smack in the middle of the Dana Point Harbor.
