Every time i further modify my gear to DIR specs, i find that what they say makes sense, and for the most part, works very very well (don't have that canister light yet..well see how that goes). That's been the attraction of DIR for me personally.
As far as impressing chicks with a BP & wings (who the hell thought up that nonsense?), well, my stuff is getting so well used and beat up, it ain't gonna impress anybody! Who knows, maybe chicks are impressed by less than cosmetically perfect modifications on homemade backplates and frayed webbing and leaky drysuits.
As for some DIR proponents pissing off the rest of the world, including other DIR divers, well now whose own worst problem will that ultimately become?
