Analyze the situation a little further.

There were major buoyancy issues that MHK brought to light (could have been fixed via oral inflation). A pony bottle doesn't fix this. Larger tank or tanks doesn't change the fact that this person ran out of air in first place, could have run out of air a few mintues later....bad air management and poor buddy management. I ask my buddy how much air if he/she won't show me dive is over, period...Don't think, Know what you have and what your buddy has. So I disagree that two independent divers with 'redundant' gas supplies would have saved the diver's life. Buddy skills and ability to remain calm and execute a predetermined safety plan was what is needed in this situation.
