Not at all.. If you were OOA and came to me for gas, I would donate my primary, I would switch to my back up and get the situation stabalized.. Only then would I hand off the bottle which I would clip off, or you could clip off, on your shoulder D-ring and your hip D-ring.. You wouldn't be holding anything.. The other reason why we do not use steel stages is for one of the reasons that you cite.. Their heavy.. Al 40's aren't much to manage..
By handing off a bottle, let's say for example this weekend, it's possible that even if they seperated that the OOA diver could still have survived.. Most people that use ponies usually mount them to their tanks so you loose the option of handing them off...
