But I think you discount two important issues:

1) The C02 buildup is real and it happens quickly without warning and should be avoided if at all possible because it's deadly;

2) The few quick breathes, in addition to getting you ready for teh ascent, also preclude you from further descending.. I'm having trouble in my mind figuring out how these guys made it to 50' and then wound up at 140'.. Something obviously went terribly wrong and in my view the expanded air in your BC from 120' to 50' doesn't provide sufficient lift to ascend.. I'm not talking about blowing up the Goodyear blimp, I'm just talking about a few breathes to help the ascent and prevent the sinking. This is of particular importance when you are doing a free acent, as is the case last weekend...
