In the instant case I'm not sure what to make of it, but my sense is that he was probably over weighted [ I have no specific support for that theory, other then I see it all the time] and was working real hard to get to the surface.. He indicated, according to reports, to the buddy that his reg was malfunctioning.. As such, it's possible that he couldn't inflate his bc and was working hard to surface.. The fact that they made it to 50' is indicative of the fact that they should have survived.. Where the hell the third guy in the team was, is beyond anything I can imagine..

Obviously if we find the body and recover the equipment we may get some of these answers, but from a purley speculative point of view, I think C02 added to an already precarious situation...
