Julie,

I watched a guy this last weekend take a brand new Scuba Pro regulator and soak it in salt water, with the attached BC, right off the dock to get his BC straps wet. No dust cap. Forget the mutiple acts of stupidity, this is the type of gear you can end up with buying used. Some gear, like regs and BC's, may be better off being purchased on sale somewhere. Even computers can have major problems from abuse and flooding if integrated.
If you have to buy used, find gear you can look at first. If you're buying sight unseen you may be throwing money out the window. Better yet it's fall, look for SCUBA swaps at dive shops and clearance sales on this years models. It's not worth saving a few bucks when you're at 60, 70, 80 feet. You want to be confident in the gear you are using.
