When you dive the area called the Isthmus, which includes Bird Rock, Ship
Rock, Isthmus Reef... you can see the spit of land where the foothills on
either side neck down. Farnsworth is about 1/2 mile from you!. The only
problem is that it is on the other side of the island. If you are at the
Isthmus I think it would take you another 2-3 hours (on a typical dive boat)
to get there. It is a gerogious site but is not recommended for the novice
diver. Think of it as a Eagle Reef on hormones. It consists of a series
of pinacles the highest starts around 60-80 feet Most are much deeper.
Depths can easily reach in excess of 200 feet. Now for the challenging part,
you can get ripping current because you are on the unprotected side of Catalina
Island, viz can go from 100 plus to 20 depending on when you are there, large
swell can be fun... the list goes on. I have been on 5 dive boats where the
boat was sold as a Farnworth trip. I have made it there on those "open" boats
twice. When that happens we end up this side of the island due to conditions.
