If you search the archives, you will see that there are many, many schools of thought on dive computers. My recommendation; get proficient with the dive tables before you even THINK about getting a computer - it's too easy to get lazy and start relying on your computer exclusively. And if and when you do get a computer, get something like a Suunto Vyper that allows you to operate in "guage" mode (in other words, it will record your dive profile without calculating your NDLs) so you still have the option of practicing tables. If you do use your computer as a computer, (letting it compute your NDLs) don't stop planning your dives just because you think your computer will keep you out of trouble - because it won't. Lastly, after you buy a computer, do the tables anyway after every dive - not only will this be good practice, it will come in very handy if your computer should fail during a multi-dive trip.
