At last Wednesday's very successful DIR demo for the California Wreck Divers, John Walker asked how many of us were team divers. Not one hand went up. That didn't mean it was a room full of solo divers. It meant that when we dive a wreck we're one big team, each of us self-reliant and independent of one another. This also applies to a boat load of bug divers: all on the same reef system but each diver independent. Both "systems" are definitely not DIR but that's the reality of most sport diving, world-wide.
A side bar: the Halcyon crotch strap is necessary with their wing and backplate rig because the shoulder straps are non-adjustable and have to be loose (three finger wide gap between strap and body), consequently the tank(s) would ride up and down without the crotch strap. I personally retro-fitted my straps so I can cinch them tight and consequently have no need for the crotch strap. There are very few things I enjoy between my legs and that definitely ain't one of 'em. ;-)
