Hmmm, look stupid in front of an instructor (which you won't, at worst you'll look like you've never done it befeore, which you haven't)? Or look stupid after someone drags you out of the water because you couldn't handle the conditions without an instructor present, hopefully alive and without serious lasting injury such as paralysis?
Diving is not a competition. No one expects you to know how to do something before you've been taught. Swallow your pride and just take the course.
