when you need one, there's nothing else. If you and your buddy comunicate well on the surface, not much to talk about underwater. I've needed mine more for other divers if I spot a problem with their gear, like a loose fin or tank strap, then my buddy. I keep a small one attached to my 4Cell light I always carry. That way the slate isn't an extra something floping around.
