I've been using one of those compasses for a couple of years, so I guess it probably has 150-200 dives. Against all my expectations, it hasn't cracked and the bezel still rotates fairly smoothly. I presume the compression differential between oil and water isn't great enough to make a difference at sport-diving depths.

I'm not sure what surprises me more: that it has stood up to the rigors of beach diving, or that I can lose and break so much expensive equipment but keep the cheapest piece of gear that was never designed for diving in the first place.

Go figure!
