Rob,

It's hard to answer your post without playing favorites. Since most of the So Cal boats run good operations, I won't do that.

Sometimes they run trips that cater toward hunting, other times toward sight-seeing/photogs, and other times toward OW classes. Now that summer is over and classes are not so full, more boats tend to focus on hunting.

I suggest you go to www.saintbrendan.com, check the calendar and find some open boat trips that fit your schedule. Generally, outer islands (Nic, S. Barbara, Rosa, Miguel etc.) are better bug producers, but conditions tend to be rougher there, especially at this time of year. Having said that, there are plenty of good lobster spots on the front side of Catalina.

Then call those boats and tell them you're looking for some good bug spots and ask if that fits with their plans for the trip.

If they want you as a repeat customer (and they do), they'll be honest with you.

Jon
