Here's Bruce Watkin's comments on the topic as posted on the Northern California scuba list:

Molas are normally pelagic fish and mostly feed on jellyfish. They come into bays this time of year to have external parasites
removed by "cleaner" fish. Sea lions love to chase them down and chew their fins off. I've never seen sea lions actually eat
molas, just seem to enjoy the sport of killing them.
