I've heard GUE is good. If you want to stay mainstream, I've done both SSI and PADI classes, and no comparison, SSI training is much better. The actual books aren't that diff, but the instruction approach is very different, and not so McDonalds approach as PADI. I'm told NAUI is also very good.
Big rule is TALK to the instructor (several) before making the final decision. Good luck.
