the difference between a SS backPLATE and the SP backPACK. Is that correct? Are you referring to the plastic packs that are narrow at the top with a handle and they fan out at the kidney area? If so, the difference between how each holds the tank may be offset by the thickness of the material. While the SS plate has a ridge where the tank sits, it's only 1/8th" thick. As I recall those backpacks, they're about an inch thick, so there actually could be very little difference in how far the tank acutally sits from your back. I thought the major objection to the backpacks beyond the lack of wing was the tendency to put the quick release buckle at the shoulder. I have to admit that I was nervous about giving that up when I moved from BC to BP, but I don't really miss it, and it's no more difficult to doff and don.

M2c, hopefully interpreting your question right!
