I never said the bungie is so loose it isn't stretched at the surface. Look, instead of using a discussion of a really simple concept to spout polemics, why don't you try it and then come back and tell us what's wrong with it.
You could tighten your strap at depth, but then you'd risk having it too tight on ascent. You could spend the whole dive tightening and loosening the strap, until it broke and you lost your gauge, but then you'd look like a bigger moron than you do now. When you actually start diving, you'll see how keeping things simple gets you further in the long run.
