I think you went out too early.

The best success I've generally had has been when the dive is done is the 8-10PM time frame (and Chris' comments seem to bolster that), although I would guess the mating frenzy goes on throughout the night.

However, remember that after mating, the squid die, and are consumed by just about everybody. So if you're diving before the next wave of maters comes in, you likely won't see any squid lying around.

But on my dive Saturday morning, I did run across an octopus who had a dead squid firmly ententacled and was hapily munching away. So you never know.

But it is a fabulous dive and conditoions the last couple of days have been truly outstanding.
