Seals tend to be solitary or travel in pairs, while sea lions often are in large groups. Also, sea lions will bark under water while seals are silent. The alpha male sea lions are very easy to spot. They're usually HUGE and have a very prominent forehead. Above water, seals are able to support themselves on their front flippers while seals, who favor more developed rear flipers, can't.
