My most memorable encounter with a sea lion was last year during AOW dives at Casino Point. Our instructor laid out a tape measure on the sandy floor north of the stairways. A sea lion appeared out of nowhere, sat on the bottom watching us, then picked up the measuring tape in its mouth and swam back and forth with it. After a minute or so it dropped the tape and buzzed a couple of us, sort of darting into our faces and pretending to take a nip. Seemed halfway between playful and territorial.
