In Monterey I can easily get nitrox at the usual $8/fill rate. (Not sure if air cards lower it a bit) And whereas before only one boat and then one shop did it, now the majority (and all the good shops) do. That would suggest it can be done profitably.

I think a lot of credit must be given to Anywater Sports (San Jose), their boat (Cypress Sea), and its Captain, Phil Sammet, for promoting nitrox in the early days. I trained with him for it back in 1996 and was able to use it on the boat without doing anything but paying extra for the gas. I think they jumpstarted the market for it, and now the hassle factor is greatly reduced.

This is in a market where nitrox isn't nearly as beneficial as it would be in LA, too.
