I never had anything but rock boots so I can't compare. The only disadvantages I can think of is that you have to don the boots and tie them and that you will probably need a bigger size fin.
Mine kind of scratched me on my heels during the kick cycle but that faded once they got a bit softer there. Other than that, I feel very safe walking in them on any terrain including boats. I think you'll like the upgrade.
