If you have a good military surplus store handy, you can get "rock boots" at a fraction of the cost of the DUI version. I've seen Mil-Spec canvas sneakers in small sizes go for under $10, under $20 for the more popular larger sizes.
Several outdoors outfitters have versions of "water shoes" that are even better yet.
Some manufacturers of wetsuit boots are getting very sophisticated with the kinds of soles put on nowdays, no lacing up required.
