The water temps are generally a few degees warmer in SoCal, although I have dived here and found it two degrees warmer in Monterey two days later once. The water hue also tends to be a little bluer here. The Central Coast has larger fish on average and much more variety of rockfish and nudibranchs. The farther north you travel, the larger sizes become prevelant. A large Lingcod in SC might be four to five feet, while in Seattle that would be considered small. The same goes with Octopus, Halibut and other fish. To find Metridium anemonies in L.A. you need to dive well below 100 feet and usually on a wreck or artificial reef. In Monterey Bay they are fairly shallow. At the jetty on Whidby Island in Washington they are found in five feet. What SoCal offers are many more days of good diving conditions per year, warmer temps and LOBSTERS!
