There are a couple of other things we have in Southern California that I don't think you'll find in Monterey:

Giant kelp forests, found along portions of the coast and more extensively around the Channel Islands.

Black sea bass, found primarily at Catalina and San Clemente Islands. (I don't think their range extends too far north). These magnificent fish grow up to eight feet long and tollerant of divers getting close to them. They're becoming more common now that they are a protected species.
